According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan’s housing starts in March were 69,411 units, down 2.9 per cent from the same month in the previous year, said the Japan Lumber Journal Thursday. This marked a year- on-year reduction for the first time in 19 months. Seasonally adjusted annual rate was 896,000 units, which went below the 900,000-unit mark for the first time since January 2013.
Total floor area decreased in the wake of the previous month to 5,915,000 square meters, down 6.2 per cent. As a result, total housing starts in the 2013 fiscal year were 987,254 units, up 10.6 per cent from the previous fiscal year.
