US Softwood Lumber Exports: First Half 2018


As an exciting sneak preview of the upcoming quarterly issue of Madison’s Forest Pulse, the latest data on US lumber exports paints an astonishing picture.

Given that Canadian sawmills are being blamed for high lumber prices — in large part due to the current punishing US softwood lumber duties — the stunning increases in US lumber exports to China.

VALUES OF US LUMBER EXPORTS TO CHINA AND THE WORLD: FIRST HALF 2018

The VALUE of US coniferous sawn wood products EXPORTS to China skyrocketed further, after steady growth for 2017, by +23.5%, to US$125 million, compared to the previous year’s US$95 million. For January-Aug 2017 there had been an +16% increase.

That to THE WORLD increased it’s previous acceleration, and was up +12.5%, to US$612 million, compared to US$536 million for the first half of 2017.

It our previous issue, for full-year 2017, this was up +9.7% .

The VALUE of US coniferous sawn wood products IMPORTS from Canada also improved their previous growth, by +5.5%, to US$3,558 million in January to June 2018, compared to US$3,186 million the year before.

For full year 2017 it had been up +4%.
