Railway Carloads, Forest Products: Canada and USA Oct & FY 2018


In data released just Thursday, railway carloads of forest products in Canada are down somewhat in October 2018 compared to one year ago. US data, meanwhile, out for full-year 2018, also shows a decrease in forest products moving on railways.
Both countries had substantial reductions in 2018 from 2016 volumes of railway carloadings for wood and forest products.
In the US, volumes of forest products transported by railways for full-year 2018 were down 289 carloads compared to the previous year, at 9,117 railway carloads, according to the Association of American Railroads January 3.

In Canada, tonnages declined for lumber, which is down 71,000 tonnes or -6.9% in October 2018 compared to the previous year, said Statistics Canada Thursday.

When measured at railway carloads, Canada shipments of lumber for January to October 2018 is down -2.6% compared to the first 10 months of the previous year, at 120,458 railcars compared to railcars for the same time period 117,342 in 2017.
