This Week: Madison’s 12-year Anniversary Under Third Owner

Twelve years ago this week Madison’s Lumber Reporter’s second owner, Laurence Cater (Laurie) retired and I took over ownership of the company.

Peter Madison started the weekly North American construction framing dimension softwood lumber price newsletter in Sept 1952, then Laurie bought it from Peter in 1973 and the two worked together for five years.
In 2003 I was hired by Laurie for layout and print production work of the weekly 12-page newsletter and the annual Madison’s Canadian Sawmill Directory. (download a sample of an old .pdf: https://madisonsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/mclr072718.pdf )

It has been a wonderful and very interesting time … the forestry business is incredible complicated, involving a large number of quite disparate variables, each which operate in their own marketplace subject to independent fluctuations of supply-and-demand
(IE: on the demand side is US housing starts, home sales, and house prices while on the supply side is anything related to timber harvesting as well as sawmill production and capacity utilization rates).

Running the weekly Madison’s Lumber Reporter for the past 12 years has been an endlessly fascinating and interesting time. I look forward to many, many more years providing this vital and timely information to those involved in the North American softwood lumber industry. — Keta Kosman
