North America Softwood Lumber Production, Sawmill Capacity Utilization, WWPA: MARCH 2020


For the first three months of 2020 softwood lumber production in the US improved further compared to one-year-ago, increasing on the previous month’s rise, says the latest issue of the Western Wood Products Association’s monthly Lumber Track.

For January to March 2020 US lumber production volume increased by another +5.2% to 9,161 mfbm compared to the first three months of 2019 when it was 8,708 mfbm. Comparing the month of March to February 2020, US softwood lumber production was flat at 2,997 mfbm for March 2020.
Softwood lumber production in Canada continued to plummet, down by another -8.4% in the first three months of 2020 to 5,843 mfbm, compared to one-year-ago when it was 6,382 mfbm.

In British Columbia sawmill production volumes continued dizzying drops, down another -16%, to 2,253 mfbm compared to January – March 2019 when it was 2,684 mfbm.

US sawmill production as per cent of practical capacity for January to March 2020 jumped by +4%, to 86%, compared to 82% in the first three months of 2019, said the Western Wood Products Association’s monthly Lumber Track.

Canadian sawmill production as per cent of practical capacity dropped sharply in Jan – Mar 2020, at 78% compared to the first three months of 2019 when it was 81%.
