The US Association of American Railroads (AAR) Friday reported US rail traffic for the week ending June 27, 2020, as well as volumes for June 2020.
US railroads originated 794,256 carloads in June 2020, down -22%, or 228,975 carloads, from June 2019. US railroads also originated 1,004,933 containers and trailers in June 2020, down -7%, or 70,994 units, from the same month last year.
Combined US carload and intermodal originations in June 2020 were 1,799,189, down -14%, or 299,969 carloads and intermodal units from June 2019.
Total combined US traffic for the first 26 weeks of 2020 was 11,699,576 carloads and intermodal units, a decrease of -13% compared to last year.
In April, Canada’s railways posted their worst month in five years for freight car loadings, according to data released by Stats Canada also Friday.
The railways carried 30 million tonnes of freight during the month of April, down 10 per cent from the same time in 2019, said Statistics Canada Friday.
Canadian railroads reported 65,535 carloads for the week, down -23%, and 61,901 intermodal units, down -6% compared with the same week in 2019. For the first 21 weeks of 2020, Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 2,927,865 carloads, containers and trailers, down -7%.
