Here is a SNEAK PEAK at tomorrow’s print benchmark Western Spruce-Pine-Fir (WSPF) softwood lumber prices:
“Demand eased somewhat, or possibly suppliers just did not have prompt wood on hand to sell. Lumber prices continued to rise but by smaller increments than during the past couple of months. Replacement items were again more popular than the standard Western or Eastern S-P-F or Southern Yellow Pine; for example Hemlock/Fir Inland 2×4 prices jumped up by $110 mfbm. On the other hand, Utility/#3 Western S-P-F 2×4 lumber prices corrected downward by -$18, or -3%.” — Madison’s Lumber Reporter
Usually Labour Day marks the “beginning of the end” for US home building activity, with softwood lumber prices similarly slacking off. This year many end-users are still waiting for wood they ordered during summer, meanwhile sawmills are still working to ramp up production and lumber inventories are more lean than they have been in recent memory.
Rising yet again but by a smaller degree than in recent weeks, the wholesaler price of benchmark construction framing dimension softwood lumber item Western Spruce-Pine-Fir KD 2×4 #2&Btr for the week ending Sept 4, 2020, was US$966 mfbm (net FOB sawmill), an increase of +$26, or +3%, from last week when it was US$940.
